From past to present, the existence of psychoanalytic interpretation is manifested in various fields of art such as literature, music and cinema. As a sub-branch of cinema, animes create a world where the child can reflect his/her inner world by combining stories and images. With this feature, animes are similar to the projective tests that offer space for the child to interpret the displayed contents presented by thematic images. Nowadays, it has a great importance to think over animes which have started to attract attention once again and occupy an important place in the inner lives of children. The aim of this study is to reveal how the artistic material, function as a defense mechanism in projective test applications through a case study; at the same time to raise awareness on the similarities between animes and projective tests. The subject of the study is to explain how some images and scenes from the anime movie My Neigbour Totoro (1988), and how the main character Totoro appeared on the cards in an adolescent's projective test applications related to his problematic, in addition to this to provide some space for thinking about the meaning of this.
