The basis of behavioral problems and acting out in children lies in an underlying anxiety and difficulty in mental elaboration of impulsive movements. Symptomatic classifications such as DSM ignore the psychological and relational factors, focusing only on neuro-biological foundations, without considering the dynamic impact of the relational environment and the specific functioning of the psychic apparatus. However, almost all forms of psychopathological functioning can be encountered in behavioral disorders. The underlying basic anxiety is different in each child with a different psychological functioning. It is crucial to identify the basic anxiety specific to each child and provide support to alleviate it. In this article, the nature of different psychological functionings and anxieties underlying aggressive acting-outs will be examined.
