In this study, in-depth interviews were conducted with two mothers who experienced the Kahramanmaraş-centered earthquake on February 6, 2023, regarding the separation anxiety their children experienced in the aftermath of the earthquake. The aim is to examine separation anxiety, which emerges as a symptom following the trauma resulting from earthquakes, one of the natural disasters that adversely affect psychological wellbeing and induce a state of emotional numbness, within the framework of psychoanalytic theory. Thematic analysis, a qualitative research analysis technique, was employed to analyze the in-depth interviews. In both cases, findings revealed that academic performance was hindered, there were difficulties with sleeping alone, and there was heightened anxiety regarding separation from the mother. Furthermore, it was observed that both cases experienced dreams related to earthquakes, losing their mother, being unable to locate their mother, and being harmed. Consequently, it is evident that the need for interpersonal connection intensifies during the post-earthquake period. However, it is also noted that there is a significant increase in the demand for maternal presence during this time. Therefore, it is recommended to incorporate the necessity for maternal support into psychotherapeutic interventions in disaster-affected areas.
