  • THE EVALUATION OF RESULTS OF DEPRESSION AND ANXIETY ON CHILDREN WITH ASTHMA USING PROJECTIVE METHODS

    Summary :

    The main objective of this paper is to investigate the affective state of children with asthma using projective tests. In this research, projective testing methods were used on the basis of psychoanalytic theory. The asthma known to be a kind of a psychosomatic disorders which is one of the most frequent chronic illnesses of childhood. The experimental group participants of this research were 30 children who were collected from Istanbul University Faculty of Medicine Child Allergy and Pulmonary Diseases Service, that were diagnosed with asthma, and were between 6-12 ages. Rorschach and Fairy Tale Test responses of children aged between 6-12 ages and diagnosed with asthma are evaluated. Content analysis of responses was applied. It has been discovered that there is very strong relationship between children?s asthma and their connection to the mothers basically in the early relationship with the mother. The emphasis is mainly on essential depression which is a basic concept discovered on psychosomatic children. The examples of the responses support the fact that essential depresion is usually accompanied by operational thinking and anxiety. Essential depression is asymptomatic, presents no feelings of sadness, inferiorty, guilt or self accusation. Essential depression can be seen when the responses obtained from projectve tests are analyzed. Operational thinking which is a descriptive and comformist way of thinking, cut off from its emotional and symbolic roots is very common. Anxiety seen on these children is especially connected to the issue of seperation. It can be summarized that strong relationship with mother is the main point to be discussed in asthma.
