When fearful children in consultation are evaluated in terms of projective tests, it is clear that these fears are generated from different psychic anxieties. There is not only one type of fear and the psychic reasons causing fear can change. In children with borderline psychic functioning, we frequently observe the inadequacy in containing functions, fears of intrusion, object loss anxiety and the threat of retaliation. On the other hand, in children with neurotic psychic functioning, the difficulty in separation with oedipal objects and the castration anxiety are central. This article will be instructive about distinguishing the primary (archaic) and secondary (oedipal) level of psychic anxieties via projective tests.
