The psychic life of babies is beginning to be recognized, after having been reconstructed for a long time from childhood and adulthood. Scientific research on the infant development, but also and above all clinical practice in perinatal and early childhood has developed in maternity, nursery, neonatal, maternal and infant protection services. Better still, the psychoanalytic clinic with babies has become a field of experience for training to understand the others ages. It participates in the renewal of knowledge about the psychic apparatus, its genesis and its deeply intersubjective functioning, as well as its pathology. Six points are underlined. 1) The rhythm specific to the baby?s time shows that there is a first level of symbolization and representation before the problem of pathologies linked to the loss and the absence. 2) The senses constitute the baby?s first mode of communication, with them the first psychic envelopes are formed. 3) Affect plays a central role in the construction of the psyche, because, linked to the body, it already has an intersubjective orientation. 4) Subjects? defenses to face the intensity of the most primitive sufferings are inscribed in the body, while the subject is withdrawing from all contact with another. 5) Listening to a subject, which passes through free-floating attention, depends on attention to the other, on variations and characteristics of non-verbal material, before focusing on word associations. 6) Care and prevention devices must have the function of a container in order to be able to receive and transform the most primitive suffering.
