Perinatal studies aim to understand the development of a healthy and unique bond between the mother and the baby along with the circumstances that promote the growth of this interpersonal relationship. M. Bydlowski points out the changes in the woman?s inner world that occur during pregnancy and calls this special period ?the psychic transparency?. The psychic representations emerged by the effects of a growing baby on the mother and her body in turn get reflected back onto the relationship between the two. The mother?s fantasy world plays an important role in shaping the baby?s unconscious. Pregnancy can be thought of as an important period of crisis that needs to be processed by both parents and extended family. During this period, the interpersonal relationships get reorganized in preparation of the future member of the family. It is only through this process that a new milieu, capable of meeting the needs of a newborn baby can emerge.
